The VirtualMD method

How we work together

Every trip is different. Dr. Patel considers your destination and regions visited, the length and timing of travel, urban versus rural travel, planned activities and exposures, food and water exposure, mosquito and insect exposure, altitude or environmental risks, and your existing medical conditions and medications. This helps determine which preventive measures are actually relevant to your trip.

  1. 01

    Tell Us Where You’re Going

You provide your destination, travel dates, itinerary, planned activities, accommodations, and any special circumstances surrounding your trip.

  2. 02

Review Your Health & Immunization History

Dr. Patel reviews your medical history, medications, allergies, prior vaccines, and relevant health risks.

  3. 03

    Determine What You Need

Based on your destination and individual circumstances, Dr. Patel identifies appropriate vaccines, preventive medications, travel precautions, and any recommended testing.

  4. 04

    Coordinate Vaccinations & Prescriptions

When clinically appropriate, prescriptions are sent to your local pharmacy, and vaccines that require administration are coordinated with an appropriate local vaccination facility.

  5. 05

    Build Your Travel Plan

You receive clear guidance on medications, food and water precautions, mosquito and insect protection, altitude or other destination-specific concerns, and what to do if you become ill while traveling.

  6. 06

    Travel With a Plan

You leave with a practical prevention strategy rather than a generic checklist — and know what to do if something goes wrong during your trip.

Prevention Starts Before You Board the Plane

The best travel medicine is preventive medicine. A few thoughtful decisions before you leave can prevent illness, protect you from avoidable infections, and help you enjoy your trip with confidence.

Travel Care Boundary

VirtualMD helps you prepare for travel while you are in Washington State. Dr. Patel can review your itinerary, health history, medications, vaccination status, and destination-specific risks, then develop an appropriate travel-health plan before you leave.

Once you are outside Washington State, VirtualMD does not provide ongoing medical care for conditions that arise while you are traveling. If you become ill or injured abroad, seek medical attention from a qualified local healthcare professional or emergency service where you are located. When you return to Washington, Dr. Patel will resume your medical care and help evaluate any ongoing health concerns related to your trip.

Care that connects the dots.

Your labs, your symptoms and your history read together by one physician who knows all three — not three results filed separately.

Honest fit

Is VirtualMD the right fit for you?

Who this is for

  • Washington residents planning international or higher-risk travel.
  • Patients who want destination-specific vaccines and medication guidance before traveling.
  • Adults who want their routine immunizations reviewed and brought up to date when appropriate.
  • Travelers who want a physician to review their itinerary rather than relying on a generic online checklist.
  • Patients who need help planning for malaria, traveler’s diarrhea, or other common travel-related health risks.

What needs an in-person visit

  • VirtualMD does not physically administer vaccines. When vaccination is indicated, Dr. Patel coordinates the appropriate local pharmacy, vaccination clinic, or other authorized facility.
  • Certain destinations, complex medical conditions, immunocompromised states, or specialized travel requirements may warrant dedicated travel-medicine or specialty consultation.

VirtualMD is not an emergency travel service. If you become seriously ill while traveling — such as experiencing severe difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, or another medical emergency — seek immediate local emergency care.

Timing Matters

Travel preparation should ideally begin well before departure because some vaccines require multiple doses or time to develop protection. If your departure is approaching quickly, contact VirtualMD as soon as possible so Dr. Patel can determine what can still be completed safely and appropriately.

How does a VirtualMD travel consultation work?

Tell us where you’re going, review your itinerary, determine vaccines and medications, and receive your travel plan. Dr. Patel reviews your destination, travel dates, activities, medical history, medications, allergies, and vaccination history to determine what preventive care is appropriate for your trip.

Can I get my travel vaccines through VirtualMD?

Dr. Patel can review your vaccination history and determine which vaccines are appropriate. Because vaccines must be physically administered, you will receive them through an appropriate local pharmacy, vaccination clinic, or other authorized facility.

Can VirtualMD help me with malaria prevention?

Yes. If your destination and itinerary create a meaningful malaria risk, Dr. Patel can evaluate whether preventive medication is appropriate and discuss mosquito-bite prevention strategies. The medication selected depends on your destination, medical history, other medications, and individual risk factors.

Can you help me prepare for traveler’s diarrhea?

Yes. Dr. Patel can review your destination-specific risk, discuss food and water precautions, and determine whether you should travel with appropriate medications or an emergency treatment plan based on your individual circumstances.

Can you review my routine vaccines even if I’m not traveling?

Absolutely. Travel planning is also an opportunity to make sure your routine adult immunizations are current. Depending on your age, health history, and prior vaccination, this may include vaccines such as Hepatitis B, HPV (Gardasil 9), influenza, COVID-19, Tdap/Td, pneumococcal, shingles, MMR, or others when clinically appropriate.

How far in advance should I schedule my travel consultation?

Earlier is better. Some vaccines require multiple doses, and certain destinations have specific vaccination requirements or recommendations. Ideally, schedule your consultation several weeks before departure. If you’re traveling soon, don’t assume it’s too late — Dr. Patel can review your situation and determine what can still be done before you leave.
