The VirtualMD method
How we work together
Digestive discomfort and breathing problems can deeply affect your quality of life. Dr. Patel takes a coordinated, evidence-based approach to digestive and respiratory health, using appropriate testing, monitoring, treatment, and specialist coordination to help you manage your condition from home.
- 01
Symptom & Trigger Mapping
You complete a detailed health history covering digestive symptoms, bowel patterns, dietary triggers, respiratory symptoms, medications, and relevant environmental exposures.
- 02
Targeted Diagnostic Testing
When clinically appropriate, Dr. Patel orders laboratory testing, stool studies, home sleep testing, pulmonary function testing, or imaging through appropriate facilities near your Washington home.
- 03
Dedicated Video Consultation
You and Dr. Patel meet virtually to review your history and results, discuss your symptoms, and develop an individualized treatment plan.
- 04
Treatment Optimization
When clinically appropriate, prescriptions are sent electronically to your local or mail-order pharmacy. Treatment is adjusted based on your symptoms, response, and clinical needs.
- 05
Continuous Care & Tracking
Relevant health information — such as symptom patterns, bowel changes, peak-flow measurements, or PAP therapy data — can help Dr. Patel monitor your progress between visits.
- 06
Proactive Follow-Up
Regular follow-up allows Dr. Patel to review treatment response, monitor screening needs, adjust medications, and coordinate additional care when needed.
Your Gut and Lungs Deserve Connected Care
Breathing well and feeling well shouldn't require navigating disconnected pieces of healthcare. At VirtualMD, Dr. Patel brings evaluation, treatment, monitoring, and coordination together in one ongoing care relationship.

What to expect
What your care may involve
Dr. Patel uses appropriate outpatient diagnostic services throughout Washington State to evaluate and monitor digestive and respiratory conditions.
What may be ordered —
8 options
Service-Specific Labs, Monitoring & Testing
- 01Gastrointestinal Testing — when clinically indicated, testing may include celiac serologies, H. pylori breath or stool testing, fecal calprotectin, liver function testing, and iron studies
- 02Respiratory Testing — appropriate laboratory testing, including CBC when indicated, may help evaluate contributing factors to respiratory symptoms
- 03Pulmonary Function Testing — spirometry and full pulmonary function testing can be coordinated at an appropriate community testing facility to evaluate conditions such as asthma and COPD
- 04Home Sleep Apnea Testing — for appropriate patients, Dr. Patel can order a home sleep apnea test that allows the diagnostic evaluation to begin from home. HSAT is intended for selected adults and is not appropriate for every patient
- 05Imaging Coordination — when needed, Dr. Patel can order appropriate abdominal or chest imaging through a Washington imaging facility near you
Targeted Treatments & Therapeutics
- 06Evidence-Based Medication Management — when clinically appropriate, Dr. Patel manages medications for conditions such as GERD, IBS, asthma, and COPD and adjusts treatment based on your response and clinical needs
- 07Smoking Cessation Support — when appropriate, Dr. Patel can provide counseling and evidence-based medication options to help you stop smoking
- 08Risk & Family-History Assessment — relevant family history can help determine whether additional evaluation, genetic counseling, or specialist referral may be appropriate
Care that connects the dots.
Your labs, your symptoms and your history read together by one physician who knows all three — not three results filed separately.
Honest fit
Is VirtualMD the right fit for you?
Who this is for
- Want ongoing physician management of a stable digestive or respiratory condition.
- Want help coordinating routine testing and preventive screenings.
- Prefer virtual follow-up for conditions that can be safely managed through telemedicine.
- Live anywhere in Washington and want physician-directed care without unnecessary trips to a clinic.
What needs an in-person visit
- Acute emergencies or severe, unstable conditions requiring immediate in-person evaluation.
- Conditions requiring a physical examination, procedure, advanced intervention, or level of monitoring that cannot safely be provided virtually.
If you experience severe or rapidly worsening shortness of breath, a severe asthma attack that is not responding to your prescribed rescue treatment, coughing up significant amounts of blood, severe abdominal pain, or black or bloody stools, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department immediately.
Need a Specialist?
If your condition requires a procedure, advanced testing, complex treatment, or specialty care beyond what can be safely managed virtually, Dr. Patel coordinates the next step with an appropriate gastroenterology or pulmonary specialist. You remain connected to your VirtualMD care team while that specialty care takes place. Dr. Patel can help coordinate records, testing, medications, and follow-up so your care does not become fragmented.
How can Dr. Patel evaluate and manage Sleep Apnea virtually?
If you have symptoms or risk factors for sleep apnea, Dr. Patel can evaluate your history and symptoms virtually and, when appropriate, order a Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT) that is delivered directly to your home.
You complete the test at home and return the device according to the testing service's instructions. The study is reviewed and interpreted by a qualified sleep physician, and Dr. Patel reviews the results with you virtually.
If sleep apnea is confirmed, Dr. Patel can discuss appropriate treatment and coordinate next steps, including PAP therapy or referral to a sleep specialist when needed.
Not every patient is appropriate for a home sleep study. If your symptoms or medical history suggest that an in-lab sleep study or specialist evaluation is more appropriate, Dr. Patel will coordinate that care.
What happens if I need a physical screening like a colonoscopy?
VirtualMD is 100% virtual, but some healthcare services — such as colonoscopy — must happen in person.
For age-appropriate colorectal cancer screening, Dr. Patel evaluates which screening approach may be appropriate for you. Depending on your age, medical history, risk factors, and screening needs, this may include a non-invasive stool-based test or referral to an appropriate local gastroenterology provider for colonoscopy.
Dr. Patel helps coordinate the next step rather than leaving you to navigate it alone.
Can Dr. Patel help me if I have an asthma flare-up?
For symptoms that are appropriate for virtual evaluation, Dr. Patel can assess what may be contributing to the flare, review your current medications and inhaler technique, and adjust treatment when clinically appropriate.
Depending on the clinical situation, treatment may include adjustments to anti-inflammatory or rescue medications and other appropriate therapy.
Severe or rapidly worsening breathing problems require immediate emergency care. If you are struggling to breathe, cannot speak comfortably because of shortness of breath, or are not responding to your prescribed rescue treatment, call 911 or seek emergency care immediately.
Antibiotics are not routinely used for asthma exacerbations unless there is evidence of a bacterial infection.
Can you manage my Crohn's disease or Ulcerative Colitis?
Dr. Patel can manage patients with stable inflammatory bowel disease when their condition and treatment plan are appropriate for ongoing virtual care.
If your disease becomes highly active, requires complex biologic treatment or infusion services, needs urgent endoscopic evaluation, or otherwise requires specialty-level intervention, Dr. Patel coordinates care with an in-person gastroenterologist while continuing to support your overall medical care.
How do you evaluate my lung function without being in the room?
Dr. Patel can electronically order spirometry or pulmonary function testing at an appropriate diagnostic facility near you.
A respiratory testing team performs the test in person, and the results are returned to Dr. Patel for review. He can then discuss the findings with you virtually and determine whether your treatment should be continued, adjusted, or supplemented with additional evaluation.
Your care is virtual; the testing happens where the necessary equipment is located.
What if my digestive or lung problem needs a specialist?
If your condition requires a procedure, advanced testing, complex treatment, or specialty care beyond what can be safely managed virtually, Dr. Patel coordinates the next step with an appropriate gastroenterology or pulmonary specialist.
You remain connected to your VirtualMD care team while that specialty care takes place. Dr. Patel can help coordinate records, testing, medications, and follow-up so your care does not become fragmented.
