If you have severe difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, rapidly worsening symptoms, signs of sepsis, or another medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
Specialist Coordination
Some infections and chronic viral conditions require in-person specialty care. Dr. Patel coordinates that care with an infectious-disease specialist, hepatologist, or other appropriate specialist and remains involved in your overall medical management when appropriate.
Can Dr. Patel treat an infection completely through VirtualMD?
For appropriate uncomplicated infections, yes. Dr. Patel evaluates your symptoms and medical history virtually and determines whether additional testing or treatment is appropriate. When a physical examination, procedure, culture, imaging study, or in-person evaluation is necessary, he will direct you to the appropriate local service.
How do I get laboratory testing done if my care is virtual?
Dr. Patel can send electronic laboratory orders to a local commercial laboratory near your Washington home. You complete the blood draw, urine test, or other ordered testing locally, and the results are returned to the VirtualMD care team for review.
Can VirtualMD manage chronic Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C?
For appropriate stable patients, Dr. Patel can provide ongoing internal-medicine management and laboratory monitoring. This may include liver enzymes, blood counts, metabolic testing, and condition-specific hepatitis testing. If your disease becomes advanced or requires specialized treatment or procedures, Dr. Patel will coordinate care with the appropriate specialist.
Can Dr. Patel manage my HIV care virtually?
VirtualMD can provide primary-care management and appropriate monitoring for stable patients with HIV when that care falls within the practice’s clinical scope. Your treatment, laboratory results, medication interactions, and overall health are reviewed as part of your ongoing care. When specialized HIV or infectious-disease management is needed, Dr. Patel coordinates with the appropriate specialist.
What happens if my infection gets worse after my virtual visit?
You should not wait for a routine follow-up if your symptoms are rapidly worsening. Contact the VirtualMD care team when appropriate for guidance, but seek urgent or emergency in-person care when symptoms indicate a potentially serious infection. Virtual care should never delay emergency treatment.
What happens if I need an infectious-disease specialist?
You don’t have to navigate the referral process alone. If your condition requires specialty expertise, Dr. Patel can coordinate an appropriate referral and provide the specialist with the relevant clinical information and laboratory history so your care can continue as smoothly as possible.
