VirtualMD is an outpatient virtual practice and is not for acute kidney failure, severe autoimmune complications, or other medical emergencies. If you experience severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, fainting, severe confusion, coughing or vomiting blood, rapidly worsening swelling, inability to urinate accompanied by severe symptoms, or another potentially life-threatening change, call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
When You Need a Specialist, We Coordinate the Next Step
Some conditions require the hands-on expertise of a nephrologist, rheumatologist, or another specialist. You don’t have to navigate that transition alone. Dr. Patel can coordinate the referral, share relevant medical information and laboratory trends, and continue managing the aspects of your overall health that remain within his scope of care.
Can chronic kidney disease really be managed through virtual care?
Much of the ongoing management of stable CKD can be coordinated virtually. Dr. Patel reviews your symptoms, blood pressure, medications, blood and urine results, and other relevant health information during virtual visits. Required laboratory testing is completed through local facilities in Washington. If your condition becomes more complex or requires specialty care, Dr. Patel coordinates with an in-person nephrologist.
What kidney tests will I need?
Testing depends on your individual condition. Common monitoring may include creatinine, eGFR, electrolytes, BUN, and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR). Dr. Patel determines which tests are appropriate based on your kidney function, medical history, medications, and risk factors.
Can VirtualMD manage my rheumatoid arthritis or lupus?
For selected patients with stable disease, Dr. Patel can provide ongoing internal medicine monitoring and coordinate appropriate treatment within his scope of practice. Some autoimmune medications require specialty oversight, infusion services, or additional in-person monitoring. When that level of care is needed, Dr. Patel works alongside a rheumatologist rather than attempting to replace one.
Why is medication monitoring especially important when you have kidney disease?
Reduced kidney function can change how certain medications are processed and eliminated. Some medications can also affect kidney function themselves. Dr. Patel reviews your medication list and kidney function together so that dosing and treatment choices can be adjusted when clinically appropriate.
Can Dr. Patel help with diabetes-related kidney disease?
Yes. Diabetes and kidney health are closely connected. Dr. Patel can monitor blood sugar, blood pressure, kidney function, urine protein, and cardiovascular risk while using evidence-based treatments when appropriate to help reduce the risk of progressive kidney disease.
What happens if my kidney function suddenly changes or my autoimmune disease becomes more active?
A significant change requires prompt clinical evaluation. Dr. Patel can review concerning symptoms or laboratory results and determine the appropriate next step, which may include repeat testing, treatment changes, urgent in-person evaluation, or expedited coordination with a nephrologist or rheumatologist. Severe or potentially life-threatening symptoms require emergency care rather than a virtual appointment.
